Big Change In Weather On The Horizon

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- Another hot day in the 90s is forecast for Thursday, but a dramatic change in the weather is in store for the region over the weekend and into next week, according to the National Weather Service.

A series of cold fronts will sweep across Northern California. Temperatures will begin to cool this weekend ahead of the first front due to arrive Monday.

Rain showers are expected across the region Monday. Snow levels may briefly drop to the higher passes such as Sonora Pass and the Highway 89 summit area near Mt. Lassen. Only a light dusting of snow is expected initially, according to the weather service.

A stronger cold front could spread periods of moderate to heavy rain across the valley and foothills Tuesday night and Wednesday.

A wet and unstable air mass may remain over the region Wednesday. Thunderstorms are possible in the valley with snow showers above 6,000 feet.

In Sacramento, Thursday's high is expected to reach 93, but it will drop to 85 on Friday and down to the 70s over the weekend and into next week. Rain is likely beginning Sunday.
