California's capital city is proud to host numerous events to honor military heroes on Veterans Day 2013. Past and present members of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Air Force have given their all to make our country the best place in the world in which to live, and this is a good day to show our appreciation.

Join veterans and other supporters at this event that features two professionally timed runs and a one-mile walk. Anyone that runs in the 11k or 5k races will get a special, collectible medal, and all event participants will receive a commemorative pin, certificate and post-race snacks and beverages. You do not have to run or walk to participate; a ceremony honoring vets will take place before the race begins and participants always appreciate the cheers of other guests. The event is a celebration, but is also a fundraiser for the Folds of Honor Foundation, an organization helping the families of disabled veterans or those killed in the line of duty.

This Veterans Day celebration is put on by the Bryte & Broderick Community Action Network, a charity-minded organization that supports and encourages success for residents of the Bryte and Broderick neighborhoods of West Sacramento. The parade, featuring floats, bands, veterans and other local private and public groups, will begin at 11 a.m. Expected to last around one hour, the parade will then segue into a fun community event honoring veterans.

The official military museum for California is offering free admission in honor of Veterans Day. The museum features 33,000 artifacts, including exhibits on the Spanish-American War, Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf War. Military arms and music are also featured, as are exhibits on the Naval Militia, Cadet Corps and Cavalry of California. Members of the US Air Force Band of the Golden West will perform at 9:30 a.m. The program, beginning at 10 a.m., is led by WWII, Korea and Vietnam veteran Lt. Col. (Ret.) Bob Burns, The Cordova High School Air Force ROTC, Pastor Mike Mitchum and several speakers, and the event's theme is "Vietnam 50 Years Later." Additional music will be performed by the Sacramento Choral Society & Orchestra, and there will be a commemoration of the F-105G "Wild Weasel" on display at the VA Medical Center.

The City of Sacramento parade draws a large number of participants and spectators, so plan to be there early to find a good spot. A pre-show program begins at 10:30 a.m., with the parade itself starting at 11 a.m. on the Capitol Mall. The event, an opportunity to show appreciation for veterans, has traditionally included music, activities for children and other displays.
