Sacramento art lovers will have a wide variety of options this summer, so there's no excuse for skimping
on the culture. From fine art in the city's best museums to lively festivals, there's an art event for
you. Forget seeking solace from the heat in a movie theater. Check out some of our summertime

One of the key movements in art history, Impressionism traveled from France in the late 19th century into America, influencing and inspiring a diverse group of artists who stepped out of the mainstream and chose to paint what they saw at that moment. This exhibition at the Crocker Art Museum features 125 paintings and follows the evolution if landscape painting and reflect the change in attitude toward nature. See works by American artists such as George Inness, Ernest Lawson, George Bellows, Lilla Cabot Perry and more.

Returning for its second year, the Banana Festival--presented by the Sojourner Truth Multicultural Art Museum--will not only feature a whole lot of bananas (in the form of breads, cakes, pies, cookies, fritters and more!), but two days of art exhibits, live music and dance, costumes, crafts and goods, and more. Proceeds from the festival will benefit the SOJO Museum, so bring the whole family to enjoy the arts while you support the arts.

Skateboarding--a true Californian sport. This exhibit at the California Museum explores the history of
a subculture born from teenage defiance and a sport that grew to become an iconic phenomenon. Curated by Z-by Nathan Pratt (who appeared in the acclaimed documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys), "Riding Concrete" features over 200 amazing items, including the first pro model skateboard and the first Zephyr board, a Tony Hawk-autographed board and other gear from California skateboarding pros.

This Labor Day weekend, the sidewalks by Fremont Park will again be awash with color and chalk art as local artists take over for the annual Chalk it Up Festival. More than 200 sidewalk paintings will be created (using soft chalk pastel mixed with water), and the concrete masterpieces will be left on the sidewalk throughout the month of September. Presented by Chalk it Up to Sacramento, a non-profit organization that works for children's art education, the festival will also feature live entertainment from local bands, musicians and performers.

Just because it's summer, that doesn't mean you have to stop learning about (and enjoying) history. This fully expanded exhibition, which will travel to the State Capitol at the end of September, chronicles the women's suffrage movement and features artifacts, images and documents from the Center for Sacramento History.
