HCC is a large building full of used furniture, décor, accessories and jewelry, and the merchandise all looks clean and in good shape. Many of the furnishings come from big-name and designer brands, but are available at significantly lower prices than when new. Items may be on consignment from private homes, but could also come from representatives' showrooms or model homes.

Ruland's is an iconic place for Sacramento residents because of the life-sized cow statue gracing the sidewalk in front of the store. Frequently seen wearing funny hats, ties, sunglasses and signs, the cow can even be rented out for the day, with the rental fee being donated to a local charity. Much of the vast space inside Ruland's is packed nearly to the rafters with used desks, chairs, tables, cabinets and other furnishings. Your home office can be set up for very little cost if you are willing to dig through stacks of merchandise; higher priced pre-owned designer furnishings are easier to spot on the showroom floor.

Scout Living offers a handpicked collection of used and antique designer home furnishings, with a focus on more eclectic modern and mid-century pieces. As with any store dealing with used items, stock rotates in and out frequently. Some of the items that have been available include a Danish Modern teak loveseat, classic RCA record console, a Westnofa rosewood and leather lounge chair, vintage teak and vinyl campaign chairs and a Danish Modern teak credenza, complete with hairpin legs. Collectors love finding pieces like chairs and dining tables by Charles and Ray Eames. Prices are high but so is the hipness factor.

This huge outdoor market takes place on the second Sunday of each month, and it is located under the I-80 freeway overpass. Hundreds of vendors offer items of every type, shape and size; to be fair, many things would more accurately be considered garage sale fodder than actual antiques. Allow time to stroll through the booths to find good deals on used and antique furniture. Keep an eye out for furnishings that show their years of service -- with a bit of effort you can turn them into prized pieces.
