Bay Area Storm Causes 2 Giant Sinkholes, Swallowing Roads
LAFAYETTE (CBS SF) — Two sinkholes were caused by heavy rain from a powerful storm that passed through the Bay Area over the weekend.
A giant sinkhole swallowed two lanes of a street in a residential neighborhood in Lafayette Sunday.
Heavy rain caused the 20-foot sinkhole to open, rupturing water and sewer lines, but sparing a gas line underneath Mountain View Drive.
That road was completely to traffic while utility crews were working in the area.
A second sinkhole opened up in the Santa Cruz mountains over the weekend as well.
A sinkhole swallowed a portion of roadway near the summit of Highway 17 on Vine Hill Rd.
That road was shut to traffic until repairs could be made.
