NorCal Highway Briefly Closed During Police Standoff
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities briefly shut down a busy Northern California interstate after a gunman barricaded inside a hotel room fired a shot toward the highway.
The California Highway Patrol stopped traffic on a stretch of Interstate 580, which includes the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, around 11 a.m. Wednesday.
CHP spokesman Trent Cross says the suspect is inside a room at the Extended Stay Hotel. Cross says the man, whose name has not been released, is wanted in a San Rafael supermarket stabbing.
The closure lasted about an hour. Eastbound traffic began flowing again around noon, and CHP officers began escorting westbound traffic on the bridge around 12:15 p.m.
The standoff at the hotel continues.
