A traditional New York bagel is boiled before it's baked, and that's the case for the New York namesake. Traditional styles are available, but some unusual offerings — walnut cranberry, spinach parmesan and cinnamon apple — have devotees as do the salmon and scallion spreads.

With more than 100 locations in Washington, Oregon and California, Noah's has a huge following who choose from regular fare bagels — sesame, cinnamon raisin and poppy seed. But it's the unique choices that are unlike any other bagels around — cracked peppercorn, asiago and the everything bagel. They're all house favorites. Schmears run the full gamut, too. Specialty sandwiches are plentiful creations and there are a half-dozen coffee choices. The midtown location has strong morning crowd, but bagel availability remains steady throughout the day.

River City bagels are boiled before they're baked. Regulars also know they can only get their bagel fix during restricted hours, 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

There aren't too many bagel places around that offer cranberry/orange bagels and fresh-squeezed orange juice. But this place, in the former Manhattan Bagels location, which once house Wobbles Drugs, does. It's a convenience stop for East Sacramento residents or those on the way to work and commuting on H Street. In addition to a variety of bagel sandwiches, there are a lot of catering options and a good deal on day- old bagels, $3 per dozen.

Downtown Davis has a vast selection of casual dining locations, with Posh Bagels as a good choice for vegetarians. It has a vast selection of bagels (and mini bagels), with reasonable prices. It's open at 6 a.m., a good convenience for students and other early birds. House favorites include the marinara bagel and tomato basil cream cheese.
