Baby Giraffe Named After Giants Rookie Brandon Belt

VALLEJO (CBS13) – San Francisco Giants outfielder Brandon Belt, known as 'Baby Giraffe', is getting a tall honor.

A newborn baby giraffe has been named Brandon in the Major Leaguers honor.

The baby giraffe was born at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo on Friday, August 27.

The 6'2" baby was born to seven-year-old mother Makali, a reticulated giraffe, and the sire, seven-year-old Nyumekye.

Giants announcer Duane Kuiper dubbed Belt "Baby Giraffe" because he thought he looked like and moved like one.

"We look forward to park guests welcoming our new calf to his home here at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom" said Dale Kaetzel, Park President. "While our goal is to ensure the health and welfare of our animals, we are thrilled to be able to have some fun in partnership with a great young player like Brandon and the Giants organization."

Brandon Belt and his namesake are expected to meet for the first time this week.

Brandon, the giraffe, is expected to grow to more than 18 feet in height.
