Arrest Made For 1982 Murder Of 2 Calif. Girls
STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) -- A man wanted in the 1982 rape and murder of two California girls has been captured in Mexico after nearly three decades on the lam.
The Record of Stockton reports that FBI and Mexican federal police arrested 51-year-old Alfredo Reyes on May 27 outside a Tijuana pool hall.
Authorities say Reyes and Antonio Espinoza picked up two 13-year-old girls on a Stockton street, then raped, beat and killed them. The body of Renee Rontal was found in a ditch outside town with her throat cut, and Nancy Rubia was found nearby, face down in shallow water.
Espinoza was arrested a year after the murders and is now on California's death row.
San Joaquin County prosecutors say they're negotiating with Mexican officials to extradite Reyes back to Stockton to face charges.
