Another Round Of Rain Coming To Sacramento Area Monday Morning
SACRAMENTO (CBS/AP) — A storm system moving across California is bringing cool, wet weather and snow in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
Chains or snow tires are required on most mountain highways around Lake Tahoe on the California-Nevada border as forecasters predict up to 18 inches of snow at the highest peaks through Monday night.
Chain controls on Interstate 80 caused traffic to back up for miles Sunday night.
The National Weather Service in Sacramento says a low-pressure system from the Gulf of Alaska is expected to drop up to ¾ of an inch of rain in the low elevations. Rain will arrive in the valley around 10 a.m. and keep much of the valley and foothills wet through the middle of the day. It will taper off Monday evening.
Snow will begin to intensify again in the Sierra Monday afternoon and continue into the night, with snow level coming down as low as 3,500 feet.
The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Donner Summit (Interstate 80), Echo Summit (Highway 50) and Carson Pass (Highway 88), which remains in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday.
Temperatures in the San Francisco Bay Area and Central California are expected to dip to the 40s.
Rain is also anticipated along the Central Coast and in Southern California.
