American Fire More Than 20K Acres, 66 Percent Contained
FORESTHILL (CBS13) - The American Fire has been burning for nearly two weeks in Tahoe National Forest and has grown to more than 20,000 acres Friday.
More than 1,800 firefighters are still battling the blaze from every direction, mopping-up on the west and north sides of the fire to prevent potential hotspots from crossing containment lines.
Thursday's strong winds fueled hotspots outside containment lines on the northeast corner of the fire, but were quickly extinguished thanks to the assistance of infrared equipment.
The eastern portion of the American Fire is causing the most trouble due to the steep terrain.
The fire is now 66 percent contained, and is estimated to be fully contained by September 1.
The heavy fuels will continue to spread smoke to the surrounding areas, which remains a health issue.
Robinson Flat Campground and Duncan Peak Lookout remain closed. Foresthill Road is closed from Humbug Canyon Road to Robinson Flat Campground.
French Meadow Reservoir and access to the Oxbow Middle Fork American Rafting Launch remain open.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
