Alleged Shoplifter Abandons Children In Store
TURLOCK (CBS13) -- A mother has been arrested after fleeing a department store after being spotted shoplifting, leaving her children behind in the process, authorities said.
Asyeshah Karriem, 43, was attempting to leave the Kohl's in Turlock with her 8- and 10-year-old boys when officers confronted her about the merchandise she was allegedly trying to steal.
Authorities said Karriem fled the store, leaving the two stunned children to fend for themselves.
"The two young boys that were standing there were pretty much at a loss," said Turlock Police Capt. Rob Jackson. "The kids were upset, they were crying."
Officers called Child Protective Services workers to take custody of the children, and police eventually located Karriem and arrested her for violating her parole, theft and child endangerment.
Karriem was not available for comment. The two boys have been returned to custody of family members.
