Alleged Drunk Driver Hits Tree After Driving Into Dollar Store

FAIR OAKS (CBS13) - It's going to cost more than a dollar to clean up a mess left behind after a suspected drunk driver slammed into a Fair Oaks dollar store.

"It's crazy," said Bob McClendon. "I shop here all the time."

McClendon loves the Dollar Tree off Madison Avenue in Fair Oaks.

"I come here to get my bread. A dollar a loaf, you can't beat that," said McClendon.

But on this Saturday shopping trip, it didn't quite look the same.

"I see them cleaning up everything in there, and it all was taped off and everything," said McClendon.

Halloween decorations and shattered glass everywhere, this was the mess workers showed up to see.

California Highway Patrol officers suspect a drunk driver is to blame. The vehicle came through and smashed the window, and instead of stopping, the alleged driver backed up and took off. He didn't get far after crashing into a nearby tree. That's where police found him.

The driver was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. No one else was injured.

Shopper James Jackson believes if it had been later in the day, there would have been a potential tragic outcome.

"There's always people in that section, and they would have definitely gotten hurt," said Jackson.

Officers say the driver will be charged with a DUI once he is released from the hospital.

The accident is still under investigation.

The Dollar Tree has surveillance video of the crash, but it has not been released.
