Crash On Interstate 80 In Newcastle Takes Out Guardrail
NEWCASTLE, Calif. (CBS13) - CHP says alcohol is not to blame for a crash on Interstate 80 early Tuesday morning that took out 100 feet of guard rail and sent one man to the hospital with injuries despite the fact that empty alcohol containers were found inside the vehicle and the occupants lied to CHP about who was driving.
The crash happened around 4:30 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of I-80 nearNewcastle. A truck pulling a large trailer hit the guardrail before smashing into a concrete support for an overpass.
CHP says empty beer cans were found inside the truck but tests showed neither of the two men in the truck had been drinking.
The two men also initially lied to officer about who had been driving at the time of the accident. One of them was taken to the hospital with a fairly serious hip injury.
Emergency crews were able to upright the trailer and two both the truck and trailer away before 7:00 a.m. However, the number 3 lane was closed for several hours as crews worked to repair the damaged guard rail.
