After School Leader Arrested For Sexual Assault

MODESTO, Calif. (CBS13) -- An after-school recreational leader has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a preteen student.

The Modesto Police Department says 19-year-old Vince Gutierrez picked up a 12-year-old student at James Marshall School and took her to his home on Covena Avenue on Wednesday.

Officers were called to the school at about 9:00 a.m. after the girl was reported missing. Staff members told authorities Gutierrez had befriended the missing student while he was working in an after-school program at the school as part of his job as a recreational leader for the city of Modesto.

Investigators found both Gutierrez and the 12-year-old student at his home and arrested him for unlawful sexual acts with a minor. The suspect was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail.

Coincidentally, the suspect lived at the former home of Scott and Laci Peterson, which gained infamy when the pregnant mother was found dead and a whirlwind murder investigation led to the conviction of her husband.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636.
