Adult School Culinary Program On Chopping Block

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — They paid their tuition and put in the time, but now some adult education students say they're hearing they may not be able to graduate.

Charles A. Jones Career and Education Center culinary students say teachers told them the program would close in June, but they're supposed to graduate in September.

Sacramento Unified School District officials say if the program closes, they'll try to make sure students can graduate, but there are no guarantees. The district is facing a $28 million deficit.

Student would be reimbursed their tuition if they aren't given the chance to graduate, but nothing can replace the hours they've already spent in the classroom.

"They can't pay me back my time, so I could have gone to another school where I can graduate from," student Delores Cardoza said on Monday.

The school board is expected to vote on the budget at its Thursday's meeting.
