Across The Top Means More Road Closures, Lane Shifts Coming For Interstate 80
By Kelly Ryan
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A new set of closures are coming for an Interstate 80 project that's switching sides this weekend.
On Saturday, Across The Top will move from the eastbound lanes to the westbound lanes, impacting Northgate Boulevard, Norwood Avenue, Raley Boulevard and Winters Street ramps, as well as closing the three outside lanes on the freeway.
Caltrans says the changes will likely mean construction gets finished more quickly, and it will be easier to maneuver.
The changes start on Saturday, but crews will start working on the westbound lanes while they also complete the eastbound lanes, meaning express lanes on both sides.
Originally Caltrans planned to have express lanes for the new construction area only, but now drivers will see express lanes on both sides. Working on both sides at the same time should speed up the completion of the project.
Caltrans officials say despite any construction frustration from drivers, the wider freeway will make a huge difference in the area's traffic flow next summer.
The California Highway Patrol is reminding drivers that the speed limit is still 55 mph in the work zone, and that they will be enforcing that.
