Acampo Rampage Survivors Describe Ordeal

ACAMPO, Calif. (CBS13) -- Two people who survived a deadly rampage last week said the alleged gunman tried to steal their car after killing two other victims.

Lorie Ann Irvine said her boyfriend Gary Morris spotted 34-year-old Howard Smith approaching their home after the suspect allegedly murdered her landlord and his father at a different home on the same block of Homestead Lane last Friday.

Irvine said used to be in a relationship with Smith and hadn't seen him since she broke up with him after he went to jail last year.

"I just thought he was here to beg for me back or whatever," she said.

Smith tried to break into her house and take her truck, and told her he had just killed 84-year-old Robert Meagher and 48-year-old Jonathan Meagher, Irvine said.

Irvine and Morris tried to hide in their basement, but Smith allegedly opened fire with a rifle, seriously injuring Morris.

"It basically blew my foot apart," Morris said.

Irvine wasn't hit by the gunfire, and Smith eventually left after telling her about his plan to kill another man, she said.

Deputies spotted Smith driving down Highway 99 and took him into custody before any further incidents took place.

"The hardest part for me is that he killed two really great people," Irvine said.

Smith has been charged with two counts of double murder and two counts of attempted murder and is being held without bail.
