About 50 Lightning Strikes Reported In NorCal
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Firefighters in Northern California were kept busy throughout the night as they battled a series of lightning-sparked fires.
Calfire spokesman Daniel Berlant says there were about 50 lightning strikes in the region late Friday and early Saturday.
One of those strikes started a fire in a rural east of Stockton that consumed about 1,000 acres.
In the San Francisco Bay area there were at least six fires started by lightning, including one that burned 33 acres of parkland near Mount Diablo.
Fire crews had contained all the fires by late Saturday morning. No structures were damaged.
The National Weather Service says the lightning strikes hit as a weather system moved through the area producing so-called "dry lightning." Forecasters say there could be more lightning in some areas Saturday, but they expect rain would also be falling.
