9 Boaters Rescued From American River

SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) -- Nine people had to be rescued from the American River under the Howe Avenue Bridge this evening.

The call came in at around 4 p.m. after several boaters were apparently in the water. One person was reportedly trapped beneath a raft.

Three river rescue boats and four fire trucks responded to the emergency. Rescuers saved some people who had been swept into the current. Other boaters were able to swim to shore.

Authorities urge boaters to stay off the river due to high, cold water levels. They also say the place where the boaters were rescued is one of the most dangerous stretches on the river because of its swift undercurrent.
