40+ Hospitalized After Woodland Chemical Leak
WOODLAND, Calif. (CBS13) – Dozens of people were hospitalized Sunday after being exposed to chlorine at a Woodland tomato canning plant, authorities said.
At least 40 people were transported to the hospital by ambulance and bus after chlorine dioxide gas began leaking at the Pacific Coast Producers Plant at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Two of the victims were seriously hurt, according to authorities.
The strong chemical smell spread into nearby neighborhoods, prompting concern from residents, but authorities did not order evacuations of any nearby homes.
Company officials said they believe the problem was brought under control Sunday afternoon but will delay any further work at the plant until they ensure the safety of their workers.
Most of the 800 workers inside the plant were evacuated at the start of the incident.
