UPDATED: Firefighters Gaining Ground On Grass Fire In Napa Area
NAPA, Calif. (AP) - Fire officials say crews are getting the upper hand on a wind-whipped grassfire in the Napa area that led to the evacuation of about 50 residents.
State fire Capt. Amy Head told KTVU-TV in Oakland on Friday morning the winds were beginning to die down. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said in a Tweet the fire was 50 percent contained.
It began on Thursday night and consumed about 300 acres in the community of Soda Canyon about 10 miles north of downtown Napa. Strong wind gusts were reported throughout the region, reaching as high as 55 mph in some areas.
Head said one outbuilding was destroyed and 20 to 30 homes threatened, but she was not aware of any threat to wineries in the area.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
