24-Hour Pet Hospital Opens In Tracy

TRACY (CBS13) – Pet owners in the Tracy area haven't had a place to take their sick cats and dogs to in the middle of the night until now.

"They would have to go all the way over the Altamont Pass to Dublin/Pleasanton area which can be pretty treacherous and scary at night," said Dr. Helena Vaynberg, a veterinarian at Paws & Claws. "Especially if you have a sick animal in your car."

Most vet offices close in the early evening, but not Paws & Claws Veterinary Hospital in Tracy.

"Well we don't go home; we provide around-the-clock care," said Dr. Gurpreet Singh, another Paws & Claws veterinarian. "If they need emergency surgery, we do provide that here."

It's a full-service hospital – from routine care to radiology, ultrasound and surgery.

"If a dog gets hurt, injured, bleeding, lacerations, any kind of sickness, illness, trauma, they need a blood transfusion – we have the capability of doing that all right here," Singh said.

There are certain conditions that will need medical attention, no matter what time of day or night.

"Toxic medication ingestion, chocolate ingestion, hit by car, bit by a dog, not doing right for a few days," said Kristen Vanderpol, Paws & Claws' hospital manager.

The 24-hour hospital is now bringing much-needed relief to Tracy-area pet owners.

"It's great because, really, things happen and you know you're in a panic and it's an emergency situation and knowing that there's something close where you know you're going to get good service, you know you can prepare for it when something does happen," said Gary Webb, a pet owner and client of Paws & Claws.

A licensed veterinarian is always at the hospital to answer calls or needs in person.
