2014 Will Go Out On Freezing Note In Sacramento As Cold Temperatures, High Winds Expected
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — It'll be a cold end to the year in the Sacramento area, as low temperatures are expected to drop around freezing this week.
The cold snap will settle over the area on Tuesday and Wednesday as the National Weather Service says strong winds are likely.
"That will cause some downed trees, power lines down and possibly some power outages," said meteorologist Craig Shoemaker.
Temperatures in the valley will be around the freezing point, especially overnight. But the possibility of 50 to 80 mph winds will make it feel even colder.
"We will have very cold temperatures especially for New Year's Eve festivities—expecting temperatures in the low to mid 30's right around midnight on New Year's Eve," he said. "And there will still be some wind around so wind chills will be down to into the low 20s possibly."
Those low temperatures on the way have already brought extra crowds seeking warmth at a winter sanctuary for the homeless.
"We take up to about 100, but we have to turn away sometimes, because we just can't hold more than what the capacity holds," said operations manager Tom Platina. "So it's very difficult to have to turn those people away."
He wishes he could bring everyone in from out of the cold, because the next two nights temperatures will be dangerously low.
The high winds will come during a very busy travel time over the holiday. The winds are expected to be the strongest on Tuesday afternoon.
