Debbie Milanova believes in creating one's own personal style, and she helps customers of her Legacy Boutique become trendsetters as well. Milanova opened Legacy two years ago and quickly developed a loyal following of customers. She grew up designing and sewing her own clothes and later worked at iconic local boutiques like Krazy Mary's and Sugar Shack for more than seven years. Courses in small business management helped Milanova realize the dream of opening her own shop.
The boutique looks like a best friend's apartment: bright and eclectic with stylish clothing draped casually across the back of a love seat, jewelry perched on tabletops and a white upright piano nestled in a corner. Milanova herself dazzles in a feminine bomber jacket in deep caramel tones with leather trim. She wears it tossed over a bejeweled white Indian crop top with camouflage pants rolled above the ankle and short brown lace-up boots to complete the outfit.
Milanova offers Sacramento fashionistas a few style ideas and a sneak peak into the hot looks of spring 2013:
Face the future with styles from the past. Spring will see the return of the 1990s with crop tops, high-rise jeans, baggy pants, large hoop earrings and even some hairstyles from the decade. Military fatigues, backwards ball caps and updated bomber jackets will reflect the popularity of hip-hop style, both on the street and on the catwalk. And the 90's "hippie" trend returns with feminine maxi dresses and long, flowing skirts.
Be creative with embellished basics. One of Milanova's favorite parts of spring 2013 is the opportunity to reinvent your look by combining unexpected items. Being fashion forward is especially entrancing when classic styles are paired with uniquely embellished pieces.
Let your imagination be your guide; look for light sweaters, purses, tops, pants and skirts that have textured accents of leather, lace, patches, studs, jewels and the like. An embellished bralette under an open airy jacket can be a fun look for both day and night gatherings this spring.
Handbags and other accessories can change the whole look and feel of an outfit. Spring styles will include sassy touches of faux animal print, studs and jewels.
Be big and bold with jewelry. Whether they are fun, fancy, sophisticated or artistic, large statement earrings and jewelry are just right for spring 2013. Oversized pendants and big chunky rings can add a completely new dimension to your look, be it edgy, tribal or sexy, glamorous or romantic.
The natural textures of wood, shells and beads are perfect for some occasions, while other outfits will be in starring roles with rhinestones, metals and brightly colored bling. Milanova says that jewelry made with rose gold, a lovely alloy of gold and copper, will be particularly popular.
Embrace your inner shoe fiend. Even a simple outfit will sizzle with the upcoming trends in fantastic footwear. Milanova predicts that modernized versions of shoes from the 70s will come onto the scene, including platforms, spike heels and other designs made of clear plastic materials.
As with clothing, embellishment is the key to the season for all styles of shoe fashions. Three-dimensional additions to standard footwear will include chains, studs, rhinestones, shells, beads and more. Also keep an eye out for shoes in nontraditional colors and patterns.
Color your world. Milanova says that white is a classic and classy color for spring, as are peach, baby pink and other pastels. An outfit of elegant, muted tones can be just right for some days, and a few splashes of bright color in jewelry or accessories can make it pop when the time is right.
If white and soft pastels don't suit your coloring or your mood, rich earth and jewel tones such as magenta and turquoise will be a hit as the weather warms. Don't be afraid to experiment with colors, fabrics and patterns that you don't usually wear. Having a personal style does not mean dressing the same way every day and in every situation.
