2 NBA Arena Bills Await Fate In Calif. Legislature
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Two NBA teams from Northern California are hoping to get help for their proposed arenas during the final days of the state legislative session.
One bill lawmakers are considering would aid the Golden State Warriors in moving from Oakland to a proposed waterfront arena in San Francisco. The other would allow the Sacramento Kings to avoid lengthy litigation on a new downtown arena.
East Bay lawmakers oppose the Warriors proposal, saying it would drain jobs from their region.
Critics say the Kings arena is the latest in a series of last-minute measures that bend rules for a particular project. The Senate's top Democrat, President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg of Sacramento, says his legislation would assist other projects.
Both bills must be approved by Sept. 13 to reach the governor's desk.
