Sacramento Man Possibly Owner Of Lost $2 Million Check
MADRID - Police in Spain are trying to reunite a lost $2 million check with its owner who may be a Sacramento resident.
According to Spanish daily El Pais, on Wednesday a maintenance worker found the wallet wedged in the track of a train door, keeping it from closing.
"It appears that the wallet was stolen on the Metro," a Metro de Madrid spokeswoman told CNN."The thief looked inside, grabbed the cash -- but didn't see the check -- and then threw the wallet away."
The wallet became lodged in the door of the train and wasn't discovered until the car was taken to a maintenance yard and inspected, the spokeswoman said.
In an interview with Spanish daily El Pais, Maintenance chief José Manuel del Cura said the brown leather wallet didn't seem out of the ordinary. However, when he opened the wallet he got a quite a shock.
"You should have seen our faces! We had to count the zeros several times," del Cura told El Pais. "We couldn't believe that someone has so much money and others so little. The world is full of inequality."
The check is post-dated to January 2014 and was issued by the Bank of America, a National Police Spokesman in Madrid told CNN. Thee wallet also contained a California driver's license and some credit cards.
TV station Telemadrid reports the check belongs to Sacramento resident Bill Guting, but officials have not confirmed the report.
