2 Hurt On Alcatraz After Tram Accident
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries on Alcatraz Island after a tram crashed into a wall near the famous former prison in San Francisco Bay.
Alex Picavette, a Golden Gate National Recreation Area spokeswoman, said the crash occurred at about 1:25 p.m. on Monday.
The tram, which is used to shuttle people with mobility issues from the dock to the cell house, was not travelling at a fast rate of speed when it crashed.
Picavette said the two injured people were evacuated from the island and taken to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment.
The cause of the accident was being investigated.
Almost 1.5 million people visit the site each year, taking tours of the cell house and prison grounds that once housed some of the nation's most notorious criminals.
