Zoo's Black Bears Make Super Bowl Picks
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- There was a special delivery to the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Friday. It was a pair of specialty pizzas prepared for the North American Black Bears, Stanley and Susan.
"They knew something was afoot when breakfast was a little late, and then some really delicious smells came," Kathy Suthard, the Pittsburgh Zoo's lead mammal keeper, said.
The pizzas were placed in their exhibit; one with a San Francisco 49ers logo and the other the Baltimore Ravens. Of course, the Chicago Bears are nowhere near the Super Bowl, so these Pittsburgh bears were asked to pick the winner.
KDKA's Rick Dayton Reports:
"A pizza made of romaine lettuce and various tropical fruits with a dressing of blueberry pancake syrup," Suthard said.
Papa John's Pizza teamed up with the zoo. They have a Super Bowl promotion where fans can win if they correctly predict the coin toss.
"We're part of the community in Pittsburgh and we're big fans of the zoo," Michael Saunton, of Papa John's Pizza, said. "I bring my kids here several times throughout the year, so I was excited and jumped at the chance."
Stanley came out first and after grabbing a quick graham cracker snack, he went straight to work in building a warm, comfy bed made of straw to beat the sub-zero wind chill.
"Stanley wants nothing to do with this," said Suthard. "He says, 'Let's go Pens!'"
Susan, on the other hand, made a beeline to the pizza box. She went straight to the 49ers pizza and never even touched the one with the Ravens logo on it.
Evidently, she a lot like many people in Pittsburgh and doesn't care at all what happens to Baltimore."
KDKA's Dave Crawley has more from Steelers' fans on who they're picking in this weekend's game:
