You Need To Eat This: Pittsburgh French Fry Roundup
Happy National French Fry Day!
Sure most people's focus might be on the World Cup final, but who doesn't have time to celebrate the most delicious snack in the world?
To celebrate National French Fry Day, here's a roundup of some of my favorite French fries in the 'Burgh (in no particular order ...):
OTB (South Side/North Park) – This South Side (and now North Park too) restaurant and bar has some of my favorite fried potatoes in Pittsburgh. They're extra crispy and coated on the outside, with a nice chewy middle. Flavorful and hearty, they're the perfect match for a tasty burger.
Olive or Twist (Downtown) – You fancy French fry people will love these. Their French fries have a light crisp, but they're coated with truffle oil and a dusting of parmesan cheese. Each fry bursts with flavor and they give you a side of creamy aioli for dipping.
The Park House (North Side) – This was a recent discovery for me and I loved it. I'm going to mix it up a bit and say this place has really good sweet potato fries. They're not too sweet and fried to perfection with a super soft inside. I highly recommend their honey mustard dressing for dipping.
Meat and Potatoes (Cultural District) – These fries are skinnier, although not quite shoe-string, and piled high. They're crispy and salty and overflowing when you order them. A side of black truffle mayo good enough to drink comes on the side and they're perfect to coat your stomach while you sip on one of their delightful craft cocktails.
Redbeard's (Mt. Washington/Downtown) – I recommend these for the DIY French fry lovers. Redbeard's s is perfect when I want a greasy fry fix, because I can load them up with bacon and cheese (and a whole long list of other things if you wish) and dunk 'em in a tasty saucer of ranch and call it a night. These are the best when you just want classic bar food.
It's Greek To Me (Brookline) – Although this is a Greek restaurant, the fries that are served with the gryro are delicious, unique and worth mentioning. They're soft and lightly fried, but not quite a potato wedge. These are good if you don't like crispy fries and want more of an earthy, potato flavor. I think they're perfect with some plain old ketchup.
