Work Along Route 65 To Close Key Stretch Of Highway

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The latest round of construction along Route 65 means a key stretch of the highway will shut down for four months, beginning on Friday.

The work affects two elevated bridges that carry the road around the city's Chateau and Manchester neighborhoods on the North Side.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation says the work, the second part of a multi-phase, $30 million rehab project, is long overdue.

"These are two structurally deficient bridges. If you're familiar with that area under 65, and look up at those structures, they are in dire need of some work and that's what we're going to do there this weekend," says spokesman Jim Struzzi.

Traffic will be diverted onto local streets.

Southbound motorists will exit at Beaver Street and re-enter at an adjacent ramp. Struzzi says crews will reopen the northbound ramp to California Avenue to serve as a detour for outbound drivers.

PennDOT is warning drivers to expect significant delays during the Friday evening and Monday morning rush hours.
