Woman To Face Charges In Alleged Attempt To Smother Child

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh Police plan to charge a 22-year-old mother from West Virginia with allegedly trying to smother her child at Children's Hospital.

According to court papers, the mother first claimed she blacked out, but later admitted to holding the baby so tight against her chest that the 4-month-old stopped breathing.

According the papers, she also blocked the view of a surveillance camera.

The boy is now in stable condition and under protective custody. All visitation has been canceled indefinitely.

The child was brought to Children's Hospital last week.

Police are investigating whether there were also attempts to suffocate the child back in Boone County, W. Va., where the couple lives.

The mother is at Western Psych undergoing an evaluation.

According to the court papers, she will be charged with endangering the welfare of a child, aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person.
