Woman Shot Multiple Times In The Legs In The Central North Side
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - It was another night of violence in Pittsburgh and this time it was in the Central North Side.
One woman was injured after she was shot multiple times in her legs while inside her vehicle.
Pittsburgh Public Safety says the shooting took place just before 1 a.m. in the 1700 block of Belleau Drive.
"I just heard 10 to 12 shots," said Yvonne Smith. "Pop, pop, pop. I was like 'Oh my God, let me go in the house.'"
Gunshots rang out near a playground by the Allegheny Dwellings housing development. No children were injured but the woman was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Smith is new to the North Side and spends most of her time at home.
"I have grandchildren," said Smith. "It's scary. We don't come out."
Rich, who lives down the street, says he is used to the ongoing violence. His home was shot into a few times in the past.
"It's kind of frightening," said Rich. "You never know if you're going to get hit with a bullet."
Public Safety says that no other victims have been located at this time. However, more shots were fired, hitting two unoccupied vehicles and a vacant apartment.
"It's horrible," said Rich. "It just doesn't make sense to me. You have to worry about them kids getting hit by a car or bullet."
While a motive is not known at this time, police say the crime scene unit was assessing the scene.
Residents would like to see more police officers in the area, but they're also taking their own steps to protect the community by holding monthly meetings.
"Everyone is stuck in the house," said Rich. "We are trying to do something with the community, getting more kids involved, doing different things. I'm hoping that works out."
He hopes it works out so everyone, especially the children, can stay safe.
"They could walk down to the store by themselves," said Smith. "Not that the older one has to trail behind them to make sure they're ok."
Meanwhile, police are searching for the suspects.
Investigators are also looking at two other vehicles and an empty apartment that were struck by bullets.
