Woman Sentenced To 5-10 Years For Fatal High-Speed Chase
NEW CASTLE (KDKA) – A woman accused of leading police on a high-speed chase in Lawrence County that ended with the death of a police officer, was sentenced to prison Wednesday morning.
Kylee Barletto, 26, was sentenced to five to 10 years in prison. She will be given credit for the 339 days she has already served.
She must also pay a $725 fine.
"It's a horrible case," said Anthony Krastek, the senior deputy attorney general. "It was just impossible to put a number on something that is this tragic."
It was a negotiated plea.
"To her credit, the defendant from day one expressed remorse, understood she had to be punished, in some sense wanted to be punished," said Krastek.
It was the morning of May 2, 2013; Barletto was involved in a police chase after she was spotted driving erratically. It ended with Barletto hitting the side of the police cruiser, killing Officer McCarthy.
Alcohol and drugs were not involved and Barletto had no previous record. Officials say she ran out of fear.
"Our main concern was the family, the family is happy with the deal. We are happy with the deal," said Shenango Township Police Superintendent William Phillips.
Barletto's parents had no comment when they left the courthouse, but during her sentencing several member of McCarthy's family read victim impact statements. The most compelling came from his wife. It read: "I do not hate you. I will not curse you. How I feel about you is between me and God."
At the end, Barletto turned to the family and apologized.
"This is not about my client, it's about Officer McCarthy and Officer Lynch and their families," said Phil DiLucente, Barletto's attorney.
