Woman Rescued From Elliott Fire
ELLIOTT (KDKA) – Firefighters safely rescued a woman after fire trapped her inside a home in Elliott Tuesday morning.
According to fire officials, the fire broke out at a home in the 1100-block of Crucible Street around 5 a.m.
Danielle McAfee said she was able to get out of the house with her son and her father. However, her mother was stuck inside.
"My dad thought my mom was right behind him and she wasn't. She was trapped upstairs," McAfee said.
"She was yelling out for us to get help," Battalion Chief Doug Praskovich said.
Praskovich said crews got to the house in just three minutes and rescued the woman.
She was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. McAfee worries what would have happened had firefighters not responded so quickly.
"Luckily he had a cell phone to call 911, or she would have been dead, they said. She inhaled so much smoke," McAfee said.
"[We] saw her up in the window, threw a ladder up and crews did a great job getting her off the ladder," Praskovich said.
McAfee said she was asleep on the couch when her 11-year-old son woke her up.
"My son. He was playing with something and I wake up and he tells me, 'There's a fire mom. I'm trying to put it out,'" McAfee said.
Concerned grandfather Charles Wenzig saw the fire on the news. He rushed over to get McAfee and her son.
They plan to stay with him until they sort things out.
