Woman In Critical Condition After Alleged "Running Gun Battle" In Homewood

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A woman was shot and wounded late Friday while driving in Homewood.

Police said she was wounded during what they called "a running gun battle" in about the 300-block of Kelly Street.

She was shot twice in the neck, but drove a short distance before getting out of her car and collapsing nearby. A man believed to be in the car ran from the scene.

Homewood is one of the city neighborhoods where police this week beefed up their patrols because of a spike in crime.

"It sounded like it was 'pow, pow, pow, pow, pow' coming down the street. All of the sudden you heard the car go 'bam.' And we're all here looking at this violence," said Wynon Hawkins, a neighbor. "When does this violence stop in Homewood? And how many more African-American people are going to kill each other behind nothing?"

The wounded woman was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital and listed in critical condition.

Also, late Friday, police were called to Downtown Pittsburgh for a separate shooting incident. It happened at William Penn Place.

A 16-year-old boy was reportedly shot and critically injured.

No arrests have been made.
