Woman Paralyzed In Freak Accident Beats The Odds, Walks Down Aisle

LISBON, Ohio (KDKA) -- She came to the rescue of a man in need and ended up paralyzed, told that she would never walk again.

But on Saturday, a year and a half later, Alissa Boyle Grimes proved them wrong. She took a walk down the aisle.

It was her wedding day.

It was February of 2012 when Alissa, a nursing student, along with another student, helped a man who had been in a car crash on Interstate 79.

Suddenly though, the three of them were forced to plunge off a bridge to avoid an oncoming semi-truck.

Alissa was paralyzed and told she would never walk. But Alissa was determined, so determined that this weekend she walked down the aisle at her wedding.

"It feels really good," said Alissa. "I'm glad that I did it. I was really nervous, but I made it down the aisle."

She wed Nathan Grimes in Lisbon, Ohio.

But Alissa didn't just walk down the aisle; she also danced at her reception.

"It meant a lot," the bride said of her day of joy and happiness.

It was a fairy tale wedding. Alissa and Nathan were taken away in a horse-drawn carriage on a day that didn't seem probable just a year and a half ago.

A non-profit organization called Jamie's Dream Team helped put the wedding on for free, to help repay Alissa for her heroic efforts. They're getting a free honeymoon, too.

We wish them well.
