Woman Killed After Being Hit By Vehicle In Monroeville Parking Lot

MONROEVILLE (KDKA) -- An elderly woman was struck by an SUV and killed as she left a grocery store in Monroeville on Tuesday afternoon.

The accident happened around 5 p.m. near the entrance to the pharmacy at the Giant Eagle in the 4000-block of Monroeville Boulevard.

The victim has been identified by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office as 87-year-old Betty Israel of Monroeville.

Monroeville Police Chief Doug Cole says Israel was leaving the store when an SUV hit her in the parking lot. The SUV ended up on top of Israel.

"There were bystanders that began CPR prior to the arrival of EMS and fire personnel," said Cole. Crews were able to pull Israel from under the SUV, she was transported to Forbes Hospital where she died from her injuries.

Chief Cole says the driver of the SUV was a woman over the age of 70. She was questioned by detectives.

"At the base here, it looks like a tragic accident, but we're going to dot the I's and cross the T's," said Cole. "The female driver has been very cooperative with police. Charges are possible, but currently there are no charges pending."

The Allegheny County homicide unit is assisting Monroeville Police with the investigation. Chief Cole said the investigation could take several weeks.
