Woman Hit By School Bus In Lawrenceville
LAWRENCEVILLE (KDKA) – A woman was rushed to the hospital after being hit by a mini school bus in Lawrenceville Tuesday morning.
The accident happened just around 7 a.m. near the intersection of Butler Street and McCandless Avenue.
A witness at the scene said the deaf woman was in the crosswalk when she was hit.
Residents in the area said it was only a matter of time before an incident like this happened.
"I was working in the garage. I heard a thump and I walked outside. There was a bus up at the corner stopped and there was a person moaning on the ground," a witness said.
The bus is operated by Monark Transportation. Residents said the buses drive too fast through the busy intersection.
"The bus came around the corner and hit [her] because they run way too fast up and down the road trying to get to their stops. I've worked here going on 11 years and it's been the same way since I started," the witness said.
Monark had no comment about the incident or the allegations that their drivers drive too fast.
Staff members from nearby West Penn Hospital saw the accident and rushed to help the 70-year-old woman.
She suffered a serious leg injury and contusions and was last listed in serious condition at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.
One witness said she was either dragged or pushed about 10 feet from the initial point of impact.
At this time, police are looking into possible charges against the driver.
No one else was on the bus at the time of the accident.
