Woman Gives Birth Along Route 119

HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A local family planned for their son to be born at a Westmoreland County hospital, but the baby had something else in mind.

Lukas Harmon was born around 6:30 a.m. in the parking lot of Long's Catering on Route 119 in Crabtree.

Ashley Harmon says her water broke around 4:30 a.m. so she and her husband left their home in Clarksburg, Indiana County and headed for Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg.

They were about a half hour into the 45-minute drive when Ashley realized they weren't going to make it. Her husband pulled over and called 911, then helped his wife through the delivery with directions of a Westmoreland 911 dispatcher.

Rick Harmon says there were some tense moments, but they knew everything was OK when they heard the baby cry. Rick even used the shirt off his back to wrap the baby. A firefighter at the scene gave him a t-shirt to wear on the ambulance ride to the hospital.

Little Lukas has some bruising on his head from being born so quickly, but is getting lots of love today from four generations of family including big brothers Logan, Landon and Levi.

Mom, Dad and baby Lukas are all doing just fine and are excited to go home and share their story with friends and family.
