Woman Facing Charges In South Side Carjacking
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A Pittsburgh woman is facing charges following an overnight carjacking on the South Side.
City of Pittsburgh police say the suspect didn't get far with the stolen van, and with the help of Duquesne University police, she was taken into custody.
Authorities say it all started when a 57-year-old female Renaissance News employee was servicing a USA Today vending box on Carson Street and 18th Street around 4:30 a.m.
When the employee went to get back into her van, Pittsburgh police say she was shoved out of the way by the suspect who proceeded to get in the van and drive off.
Authorities say surveillance cameras may have captured the incident.
The suspect has been identified by police as 25-year-old Chaqua Locke.
It was a short time later that a Duquesne University police officer spotted the van driving along Fifth Avenue in a bus lane, attempting to pull it over.
When they arrived at Jumonville and Tustin Streets in the Uptown section of Pittsburgh, other units had already responded.
Police say in the process of pulling the suspect over, the suspect is accused of putting the car into reverse and backing into one of the Duquesne University police vehicles.
After being taken into custody, Locke allegedly said "she almost was hit by the news truck, so the victim deserved to have it taken."
Police say that the stolen vehicle was returned to the owner.
Pittsburgh police say Locke is facing charges of recklessly endangering another person, carjacking and traffic violations.
