Woman Dies In Penn Hills Fire

PENN HILLS (KDKA) – One person was killed in an early Tuesday morning fire in Penn Hills.

According to officials at the scene, the fire broke out around midnight in the 100-block of Lisa Drive.

The victim has been identified as 61-year-old Eva Fabian.

Fabian lived in the home with her 86-year-old mother, who was able to escape.

"She came out.  She had her dog with her and then she said her daughter was inside in the hallway," neighbor Eddy Seay said.

Fabian was wearing a leg brace, which may have hindered her ability to get out of the house.

"She wanted to go back in. She said, 'My daughter, my daughter, my daughter is in there,'" Seay said.

"The toughest thing is, she lost her daughter. And they were real close because she was taking care of her daughter," neighbor Gonzell Phillips said.

Neighbors said Fabian was disabled and a couple people did try to get inside to rescue her.

"He had went in and he just couldn't get to Eva. He could hear her, but he couldn't get to her because the smoke pushed him out of the house.  There was so much smoke coming out of there," Phillips said.

"The back part was in flames. I went over to try and open the door and too much...the smoke and heat just knocked me back," Seay said.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but it is believed that it started in the basement.
