Wisconsin Football Head Coach Position Opens Again: Is Paul Chryst A Candidate?
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - Oregon State lost its head coach to Nebraska last week and today they surprised many by getting Gary Andersen to leave Wisconsin after just 2 seasons and become the Beavers next head coach.
This move will start rumors that the Badgers will be interested in former Wisconsin player and coach, current Pitt head coach Paul Chryst.
"First and foremost, I want to thank Coach Alvarez for the opportunity to coach at the University of Wisconsin," Andersen said. "I had the opportunity to meet and coach some great young men and I look forward to watching them as they continue their careers and move through life."
The 50-year-old Andersen was 19-7 in two seasons in Madison (including 13-3 in conference play), losing the Big 10 championship game to Ohio State 59-0 on Saturday.
"I want to thank Gary for his two years here and commend him on the way his teams performed on the field, in the classroom and in the community," said Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez. "I began working to find a new head coach as soon as I spoke with Gary this morning."
Chryst was offensive coordinator at Wisconsin for 6 years (2006-11) as he helped the Badgers go 60-19 during that time. Chryst was a three-year football letterman as a quarterback at Wisconsin and earned his degree in 1988.
Chryst is 19-19 in his third year as the Panthers head coach and has one of the youngest teams in the FBS. The Panthers play Houston in the Armed Forces Bowl on January 2nd.
NFL.com and ESPN are among the national media organizations listing Chryst as a potential candidate at his alma mater.
