Ice storm warning, winter weather advisory issued for parts of Pittsburgh area
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- An ice storm warning has been issued for the ridges and Laurel Highlands, while nearly the rest of the Pittsburgh area is under a winter weather advisory from Wednesday night to Thursday morning.
For the ridges of Fayette, Westmoreland County and the Laurel Highlands, freezing rain and ice accumulation up to a half-inch is possible. Temperatures will struggle to warm up past the freezing mark as heavy rain surges in from the southwest.
Butler, Armstrong, Indiana and counties along I-80 could see up to 0.25 inches of ice accumulation starting overnight Wednesday and lasting until about 10 a.m. Thursday.
This can begin as early as 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday for areas southwest of Pittsburgh but those areas will warm up quickly to the 40s by 4 a.m. to 5 a.m. Some locations could pick up 1 inch of rain late morning and early afternoon.
The system moves out by the afternoon and highs soar back near 60.
For Friday, seasonable temperatures return to the upper 30s, and then Saturday morning, the area could have another round of wintry weather and freezing rain. Afternoon temps are back near 50. Snow showers are also possible on Sunday.
Colder than normal temperatures are expected to return again mid-February, where single-digit lows are possible for some Tuesday morning.
