Winter Storm Warning Issued Ahead Of Incoming Snow
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- It may be spring, but winter just doesn't want to let Pittsburgh out of its icy grasp.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning from 8 p.m. Sunday to 11 a.m. Monday.
The counties under the warning include Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Clarion, Fayette, Indiana, Jefferson, Lawrence and Westmoreland.
Also under the warning, Preston County in West Virginia and Garrett County in Maryland.
KDKA's Jon Burnett expects Sunday to begin as a quiet day, but things will quickly take a turn for the worst.
"Things will go downhill rapidly as a storm moves out of the plains, into the Ohio Valley and right into our neck of the woods. By any time after six o'clock [Sunday] night, this snow could start as a little rain-snow mix and then change over to all snow by nine, 10 o'clock," said Burnett. "I think come eight o'clock, we'll probably be seeing snow on the western fringes of the viewing area and across the region by midnight. That snow will continue, heavy at times, overnight, right up until about dawn on Monday morning."
Cambria and Somerset counties are under a Winter Storm Watch. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Greene, Mercer, Venango and Washington counties.
In West Virginia, Brooke, Hancock, Monongalia and Ohio counties are also under the advisory.
Forecasters say the snow is expected to start falling on Sunday evening, accumulate between three to seven inches, and diminish by Monday afternoon.
The period of the most intense snow is expected from late Sunday through the early morning hours of Monday.
"So, we start out on Palm Sunday, we accumulate a couple of inches by midnight, and then we get another three, four, maybe five inches of accumulations during the day on Monday before it all wraps up maybe by about noon," Burnett said. "When I say wraps up, the accumulating snow will end by then. We'll still have a chance for a few flurries right into the evening hours."
Treacherous road conditions are expected during the storm.
