Winter Storm Warning Issued For Parts Of Area
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The weather was cool and calm Sunday evening, but that is all expected to change overnight as snow is set to return to the region.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Armstrong, Butler, Cambria, Clarion, Crawford, Fayette, Indiana, Jefferson, Lawrence, Mercer, Somerset, Venango and Westmoreland counties.
Meanwhile, a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Allegheny, Beaver, Greene and Washington counties.
Garrett County in Maryland and Preston County in West Virginia are under a Winter Storm Warning, while a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Monongalia County in West Virginia.
Forecasters say rain is set to move in tonight, and then change over to snow overnight.
The heaviest snow is expected to fall through the morning hours on Monday.
"Colder air pours in, moisture is already starting to stream in and when the two collide, we'll end up seeing a little bit of a wet snow mix initially, and then all snow at some point late [Monday] morning," said KDKA's Jon Burnett. "I do believe with enough accumulation to get your attention."
In Allegheny County and the areas just outside, we can expect two to four inches. The northern and eastern counties around Allegheny County could see three to six inches. Areas north of Interstate 80 could see four to eight inches while the higher elevations to the east can expect to get the most snow with six to 12 inches.
There are also concerns that the wet snow could bring down tree limbs and power lines, creating the potential for electricity problems.
"For our neighbors to the east, it ends up being mainly rain, if not all rain; but here in western Pa., look for a lot of problems with tree damage, limbs - of course the leaves are in full bloom right now," Burnett added. "The [tree] limbs and leaves are going to be picking up a lot of snow falling, creating power outages. It's not going to be a pretty picture, especially the further north and east you get."
Anyone headed out on the roads is also advised to slow down and watch for possible slick spots.
