Winter Storm Spares City, Hits Northern Counties
NEW CASTLE (KDKA) - A winter storm moved through the area overnight, but the counties north of Pittsburgh were hit the hardest.
Lawrence and Mercer counties received between 6-10 inches of snow, with some areas reporting more.
The snow on the tree branches alone in New Castle was about as much as some areas saw total on the ground.
The snow made for a fun day for the kids, but it created messy overnight travel even for the plow drivers heading to work.
"I left my house and 11, got there at 11:45," Steven Steele said. "I was sliding all through here, State Street, the whole way up the hill."
Once the morning sun was up, roads were pretty much clear, but it wasn't an easy task for plowing, shoveling, or snow-blowing.
"PennDOT and everyone did their jobs. But, it was just heavy, hard pushing," John Harshbarger said.
"Sometimes you get eight, nine inches, it's real light snow, it's not this bad. This is a heavy snow so it could be hard shoveling and everything like that," Lee Shoaf said.
On the brighter side, relatives from Richmond, Va. visiting family in New Castle for Thanksgiving relished in a sight they don't often see.
"It's wonderful. I was listening to Christmas carols. I was listening to 'White Christmas' and I said well how about a white Thanksgiving?" Betty Ekabutr said.
Motorists are still being advised to take it easy on the roads as there could still be slick spots, even if the snow may have avoided your area.
