Wind Chill Advisory Issued With Bitter Cold Moving In For Weekend
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Bitter cold is settling in, which has prompted some alerts around the area.
According to the National Weather Service, a Wind Chill Advisory will be in effect from midnight tonight until 9 a.m. Sunday.
The advisory affects the following counties in western Pennsylvania:
Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Cambria, Clarion, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Jefferson, Lawrence, Mercer, Somerset, Washington and Westmoreland
Also, Forest, Mercer and Venango counties are under a Lake Effect Snow Advisory until 7 p.m. Saturday.
Wind chills over that time span will reach below zero.
KDKA's Paul Martino has more on who Pittsburghers are dealing with the cold:
According to KDKA Chief Meteorologist Jeff Verszyla, scattered snow showers will be around tonight and later it will turn windy and much colder. He says tonight's high of 17 will drop to 6 degrees by wake up on Saturday morning.
"Be on alert, there will be a couple of scattered snow showers, but anything that accumulates will be under an inch locally, but there may be more north of I-80 where there will be some lake enhancement late tonight," Verszyla says.
On Saturday, we can expect cold and blustery conditions with a few flurries and single digit temperatures.
"We'll spend a good chunk of the day [Saturday] in the single digits, there could be a few flurries around," Verszyla said, "but when you factor in the single digit temperatures with the northwest wind at 10 to 20, that will drop wind chill values late tonight and [Saturday] to five to, at times, 15 degrees below zero."
Sunday will be a bit warmer with a high of 20 degrees expected and partly sunny skies.
According to KDKA-TV Meteorologist Ron Smiley, the coldest night of the year so far was on Jan. 13, with the low in Pittsburgh falling to 3 degrees.
Due to the cold, warming centers will be open all around the City of Pittsburgh as well some in the surrounding area.
Also, the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium will be closed on Saturday due to the cold temperatures.
