Will Maurkice Pouncey Be Able To Play In Super Bowl?
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- He's one of the top rookies in the NFL and the player who held together the Steelers' patchwork offensive line.
Now Maurkice Pouncey is nursing a high ankle sprain and there are serious doubts about whether he will be able to play in the Super Bowl.
KDKA's Bob Pompeani reports Pouncey was wearing a hard cast and using crutches.
Pouncey has been the Steelers' most consistent offensive lineman all year and earned a Pro Bowl spot in his rookie year to validate that.
But early in the Jets game, he got rolled under and left the field in considerable pain. He was carted off and then seen on crutches.
"He's a hard worker and he's going to work his hardest to get back on the field," Doug Legursky said.
If he can't, then Legursky will. He might just be the poster boy for this offensive line. Legursky has played all three interior line positions – one tackle spot, full back and tight end.
He was the guy who had to come in cold and play center in the biggest game of the year.
"It's been a patchwork offensive line from day one – people go down, people step in," Legursky said. "From the beginning of the season, Willie Colon, Max Starks, they both went down, we have back-ups coming in and we haven't missed a beat."
"I was so proud of the way Doug played," Ben Roethlisberger said. "He came in and stepped up to play for a Pro Bowler that has played all year and has done a great job. Doug has done so much for us and really, really happy for the way that he has worked, so I can't say enough about him."
"I say we have two weeks to maybe try and fool everybody and get Maurkice's brother in here and no one would know, but I don't think that's going to work," Roethlisberger added.
Pouncey does have an identical twin and the Steelers will look long and hard at drafting him in April.
As for Feb. 6, they would just love to have their Pro Bowl center ready to roll.
