Bank Robbery Suspect Shot, Killed By Police While Holding Woman At Knifepoint
WILKINSBURG (KDKA) -- A bank robbery suspect was shot and killed by law enforcement officials in Wilkinsburg Wednesday night.
Police say a joint task force that included local police and the FBI were attempting to take the suspect into custody at an apartment building in the 900 block of Center Street just after 9 p.m. when the suspect grabbed a woman and held her at knifepoint.
Allegheny County Police identify the suspect as 49-year-old Shawn Stevens. He's accused in several bank robberies in Shadyside, Squirrel Hill and one on Wednesday afternoon in Edgewood Towne Center.
Police say Stevens threatened to harm the woman if police attempted to take him into custody.
Pittsburgh Police say two law enforcement officials opened fire and shot the suspect. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman was not harmed.
One police officer was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Allegheny County Police and the Pittsburgh FBI are investigating the situation.
